Questions

What people ask before they use this tool.

Why convert GIF to MP4?
MP4 files are dramatically smaller than GIFs — typically 80-95% smaller. A 10MB GIF often becomes a 500KB MP4. MP4 also supports more colors and smoother playback.
How much smaller will the MP4 be?
Usually 80-95% smaller. GIFs store each frame as a full image; MP4 uses video compression (H.264) which only stores differences between frames.
Is the conversion lossless?
No. GIF to MP4 conversion is re-encoded. At the High quality setting (CRF 23), visual changes are often minor. At Medium or Low settings there may be more visible quality reduction, but file size savings are usually larger.
Does the MP4 loop like a GIF?
MP4 does not natively loop. Need to go the other way? Try <a href="/video-to-gif">Video to GIF</a>. However, most social media platforms (Twitter, Reddit, Discord) auto-loop short MP4s. For web use, add the loop attribute to your video tag.
What quality settings are available?
High (CRF 23) — best quality, larger file. Medium (CRF 28) — good balance, default. Low (CRF 32) — smallest file, slight quality reduction.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser via WebAssembly. GIF files are processed locally during conversion and are not uploaded to our servers.
Why does the first conversion take longer?
The FFmpeg WebAssembly engine (~31MB) downloads on first use. After that it is cached and subsequent conversions start instantly.
Can I convert multiple GIFs at once?
Currently one at a time. After downloading the result, click "Change file" to process the next GIF.
Does it preserve transparency?
MP4 does not support transparency. Transparent areas in GIFs are rendered as white in the output MP4. For transparency-preserving formats, consider WebM.
Can I share the MP4 on social media?
Yes. The output is MP4 (H.264 + faststart) — the most universally compatible format. Works on every platform.
What is the file size limit?
Depends on your device memory. Most devices handle GIFs up to 50-100MB comfortably.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. GIF to MP4 conversion is relatively fast. Most phones handle it well for typical GIF sizes.
How does this compare to ezgif?
Both tools convert GIF to MP4. This tool runs in the browser and keeps GIF files off our servers during conversion, while ezgif uses a server-upload workflow. ezgif also offers more fine-tuning controls.
Is it really free?
Yes. The browser tool is free to use, and signup is not required to start.
Can I pay with cryptocurrency?
The video tools are free. For AI writing tools with premium tiers, we accept USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH. Plans start at $9.99/month.
