Why There Is No Accuracy Ranking On This Page

This page used to open with an accuracy league table — a percentage band for each detector, and the winner labelled "the most accurate detector we tested" — attributed to a 500-sample study. That study does not exist. No such benchmark was ever run, and no data in this repository supports those figures.

We also could not honestly run it. GPTZero, Turnitin, Originality.ai and Copyleaks all prohibit the automated submission that a detector benchmark requires, and hand-scoring enough samples to tell two detectors a few points apart is not work this team has done. Any site quoting you a precise accuracy percentage for a detector it does not own is guessing, breaking someone's terms of service, or citing the one group that has done this properly. An earlier version of this sentence left out the third option, which exists: Jabarian and Imas (2025, University of Chicago Booth / Becker Friedman Institute, working paper 2025-116) compared Pangram, Originality.ai, GPTZero and an open-source baseline over 1,992 passages across six genres and four frontier models, declared no conflict of interest, and published it free. Read that if you want a ranking. This page leaves its own scoreboard blank because we have not earned one, not because nobody has.

What is worth knowing generally, and is well documented in published research rather than by us: no detector is reliable on text a human has edited, and false positives against non-native English writers are a real and repeatedly reported problem. Treat any single detector score as one weak signal, never as evidence.

How accurate are AI detection tools?

We will not give you a number, because we cannot produce one honestly — the major detectors' terms of service forbid the automated testing a real accuracy measurement requires, and Coda One has not run one. What is well established in published work: detectors are far less reliable on AI text a human has edited than on raw AI output, no detector is ever perfectly accurate, and false positives against human writing are a documented problem, particularly for non-native English speakers. Be sceptical of any site quoting you a precise accuracy percentage for a detector it did not build.

Can AI detection tools identify which AI model generated the text?

Some tools, including GPTZero, advertise an attempt to identify which model produced a passage. Vendors themselves present this as less reliable than the binary AI-or-not judgement, and it should be treated as a guess rather than an attribution. Model outputs have converged in style as the field has matured, which makes source identification harder, not easier.

Do AI detectors work for non-English languages?
